Steve Bird Marlborough
Sauvignon Blanc 2016
Crafted with fruit sourced from a stony, alluvial site in the heart of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, this wine is typically pale and limpid in its youth yet bursting with vibrant, ripe, citrussy aromas and notes of fresh-cut herbs. The palate is focussed and concentrated and the lemon-lime citrus flavours mingle with fragrant passionfruit. There is an artful balance of richness and fine acidity which make this wine a perfect accompaniment to the freshest seafood dishes, particularly oysters on the shell.
Steve Bird Gisborne
Pinot Gris 2016
Steve has found that this site in Gisborne produces pinot gris grapes that retain a wonderful flinty, minerality in the wine, for which the region is so renown. The aroma is intensely varietal, showing fresh pear with hints of exotic spice on the nose. The palate has both richness and poise with the ripe fruit flavours highlighted by the wine’s sensuous texture. This is a pinot gris with the power to match richer dishes such as slow cooked pork belly with apples.
Steve Bird Marlborough ‘Big Barrel Barrel’ Pinot Noir 2015
The picturesque hillside site in Marlborough’s Omaka Valley where the grapes for this wine were grown is truly a hidden gem; a tiny block, but just right for a family operation like Steve Bird wines. Here it has produced a genuinely impressive pinot noir with earthy, spicy notes in support of the rich, dark-fruit aromas. On the palate it is deeply flavoured and lushly textured with supple, silky tannins. This is a superb partner for crispy duck breast.
