Bird ~ Steve Bird Winery & Vineyards Ltd
Paradise ~ Marlborough, New Zealand, is heaven for winemakers. Cool. Sunny. Pristine. One of the world's best places to grow grapes.
This is the home for Bird Wines.
Marlborugh lies at the northeastern tip of New Zealand's South Island, at latitude 41 South. While this is comparable to the latitudes of warm European wine regions such as Italy and Spain, the cool ocean around New Zealand means marlborough is firmly at the cool end of the winegrowing spectrum.
The days over the growing season are long and sunny, but the nights are chilly enough to slowdown the ripening process. The long growing season gives the grapes time to develop vibrant flavours, retaining a distinctive racy acidity in white varieties.
In the relatively short time since the first grapes were planted in Marlborough in 1973, the unique qualities of the region's wines have established New Zealand as a source of some of the world's most prized wines.
Initially, New Zealands reputation was built on the astounding qualities of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. In the last two decades, other aromatic white varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot gris have also come into force. The region is also proving to be an exceptional place to grow quality Pinot Noir.
