Bird Marlborough Big Barrel Pinot Noir 2008
(4.5 stars)
It's called "Big Barrel" because its made in 900 litre barrels that are four times the volume of conventional barriques. Among other things, this contributes to the softness of the tannins, but that's not the only asset of this Pinot Noir. Look for seriously delicious fruit and excellent balance. It's an easy-drinker, but anything but a simple wine. Drink it with the usual suspects, whether they're your friends or dishes like mushroom risotto, duck breast or roast turkey.

Bird Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2008
(4 stars)
This is a lovely sauvignon blanc that 's juicy and fresh and shows terrific fruit concentration and complexity. It's the kind of wine I've referred to (in Burgundy) as "salivant" - a wine that makes you salivate and want to eat. What a great idea to serve it with food, and something like white fish, seafood and shellfish would be perfect.

Bird Marlborough Pinot Gris 2008
(there is no rating for this tasting)
Pink hue. Very floral-fragrant. Pear, melon, and lychee characters. Broad and waxy but the phenoics are somewhat grippy. Red berries and melon right through till finish.
