Bird ~ Steve Bird Winery & Vineyards Ltd
About Us ~ Although Bird Wines are newcomers to the New Zealand wine scene the founders, Steve and Caroline Bird are not.
Steve and Caroline have been active in the wine industry for the best part of three decades.
Steve (Birdman):
As a school boy Steve worked for a small family wine company based in New Zealand's picturesque Coromandel Peninsula. Steve freely admits that school wasn't his thing, in fact it is safe to say he spent more time in the winery than in the class room.
His love of the work and passion for the industry inevitably led him to study winemaking at the highly regarded Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia.
On completion of a degree in Wine Science Steve immediately immersed himself, once again, in the New Zealand wine industry, working initially as assistant to the legendary John Hancock at Morton Estate and then for Thornbury Vineyards, a company that Steve and Caroline founded and later sold.
When drawn to reflect on his past Steve recounts: "It has been a roller coaster ride, what a rush. I have ridden the wave that has seen New Zealand evolve into a serious player in the international wine community and I've emerged as a stake holder.
Caroline (Birdie):
With a bachelors degree in education from Waikato university Caroline is formally trained as a secondary school teacher specialising in mathematics.
Almost 20 years in the education industry has given Caroline highly developed skills in the area of planning, organisation and implementation. The roll out of Bird Wines has drawn heavily on these skills, as Caroline puts it "just organising Birdman is a full time job".
In addition to keeping close control of the business administration and her career in education, Caroline is super mom to the very active Bird children, Adriana and Patrick.
